For those interested in getting into the trucking industry, company sponsored CDL training may be a good option. While many individuals choose to go through a private truck driving school to earn their CDL license, there are several major trucking companies who have developed their own CDL training programs.
This is a good option for those who are looking to get hired on by a reputable company with little out of pocket expenses. However, in most cases there will be an employment contract involved.
Common Benefits of Company Paid Training
- Earn your CDL with minimal out of pocket expenses (in most cases)
- Guaranteed job waiting for you upon successful completion of training
- Get into the industry with virtually no experience
- Train on the same equipment you will use on the job, increasing your chance of success.
Companies with Sponsored CDL Training
- XPO Logistics - With a 12-month commitment to drive for XPO, you can receive fully paid tuition to attend driving school in Missouri. They even cover your room and board for the duration of the five-week course.
- Millis Transfer - As an MTI trainee you will be paid $0.43/mi when you’re on the road with your trainer. You will then receive a 1 CPM pay raise every quarter.
- Swift - Swift offers paid CDL training with an experienced Swift driver. You’ll complete 200-300 hours behind the wheel with a Swift mentor while you earn good pay. Then you’ll get job placement with Swift Transportation after you complete training.
- Central Refrigerated Service - The career path at Central Refrigerated Service begins when qualified applicants attend Central Truck Driving Academy. Applicants attend a two to three-week course. Central TDA requires no money down for training and will finance students based on their qualifications for the training program.
With Sponsored CDL Training Employment Contracts are Common
Typically a driver must commit to an employment contract when getting company sponsored training. These contracts do vary from company to company, but standard contracts range between 6 months to 1 year. The contract ensures that the company gets a return on its training investment. If a driver does not honor his/her contract they will be responsible for the full cost of the training they received.
Most company paid training is offered by companies with over-the-road job requirements. Meaning drivers will be away from home anywhere from 2-4 weeks at a time. As long as a driver is aware of his/her obligations, company paid training is a proven way to get into trucking.
