Car Transport Truck Driver Job Duties and Responsibilities

March 27, 2023 · Job Description , Trucking Industry , Trucking

Car hauling, also known as car transporting, is considered a ‘specialty niche’ in the trucking industry. Car haulers are hired to transport vehicles from point A to point B, serving a variety of client needs including moves, online purchases, and new model deliveries. These needs have resulted in transportation companies offering services like exotic car transport, covered car transport, and door to door transport.

How Car Transport Jobs Are Different

Car transport jobs differ from regular driving jobs, as they require additional problem-solving and customer service skills. Car hauler jobs require drivers to inspect vehicles for damage before staging loads, operate a variety of transport equipment, arrange vehicles on the truck, and load and unload. The ultimate goal of car transporters is to provide clients with on-time and damage-free delivery. Car haulers must also make sure their loads meet legal height, weight, and length restrictions.

Companies Hiring Car Transporters

Car hauler company jobs can be found at many transportation companies, or drivers can choose to become owner-operators of their own truck.

Here are a few of the companies hiring on CDL Job Now.

  • Proficient Auto Transport - Transport cars to and from manufacturing plants, rail heads, ports, and other locations.
  • Midwestern Car Carriers - Hiring CDL-A car haul drivers for OTR and regional positions.
  • Brothers Auto Transport - Hiring car haulers in the Northeast, Central Atlantic, and Upper Midwest areas of the US.

Drivers are typically paid a percentage of the freight that is loaded on the truck, or they can be paid or get bonuses per unit. It really just depends on the company you choose to work for.

Common Requirements for Employment

Those applying for Car Hauler jobs are required to have a valid CDL-A license and previous experience. Other common requirements are:

  • CDL Class-A license
  • 1 year of CDL-A experience
  • Authorized to work in the United States
  • No major traffic violations
  • Must meet all DOT requirements

Most companies also provide classroom instruction, on-road and dock-loading training, and a rigorous safety curriculum upon hire.
