Frac-Sand Truck Driver Job Description

April 03, 2023 · Job Description , Trucking , CDL License

Working as a frac sand hauler is an exciting and unique job within the trucking industry. Though this job is similar in some ways to traditional trucking jobs, becoming a sand frac hauler can be demanding. However, if you are a driver who enjoys more unconventional CDL work, and a challenge, you may be interested in a sand frac hauler position!

What is Fracking?

Fracking is a type of petroleum mining that uses a mixture of sand, water, and chemicals to penetrate bedrock. Oil and natural gas then come up out of the well when it is displaced by the sand and water mixture. Fracking is important to our nation’s oil and gas supply, and it is becoming more prevalent in areas like Texas. This type of mining is highly lucrative, and truckers are a vital part of the process.

Sand Frac Hauler Job Description

Just like other truck drivers, frac drivers must hold a CDL-A and are responsible for driving semi trucks safely in all terrains. They must adhere to all FMCSA and DOT regulations. Sand frac haulers are similar to OTR drivers because they are away from home typically for several weeks at a time before returning home for a few days.

Frac sand truck drivers are responsible for hauling sand and other materials to and from fracking wells. Sand frac wells are typically found in rural areas, meaning drivers must be willing to work in remote areas.

Frac sand drivers must understand how to use a pneumatic tank which is used to store loose dry goods like sand. These trailers have a learning curve and require some amount of training to operate them correctly. Not only will you need a valid CDL-A, but also the skills and confidence necessary in order to operate these vehicles.

Is a Career as a Frac Sand Driver Right for Me?

Sand fracking offers many rewards, but it comes with some greater risks than other trucking jobs.

One of the greatest challenges to frac sand drivers is the location of the wells, which are often in hard-to-reach areas accessible only by backroads and mountain roads. Drivers also work in isolated areas both at night and during the day which presents its own challenges. Because of this, most jobs require their drivers to have several years of experience prior to working as a sand frac driver.

Drivers looking for a rewarding change of pace should consider sand frac trucking jobs.
